Reed Characteristics
Sycamore bassoon reeds are made to play easily in all registers of the instrument. They are crafted from Medir cane in the Rieger 1A shape and finished on a Reeds 'n Stuff tip profiler with the PM template. These reeds are playtested on a Fox 750 bassoon with Heckel bocals. They require good embouchure strength to maximize their potential but have a light articulation. The sound is purposefully left to be slightly buzzy to help cut through the orchestra, but it will darken as the reeds break in.
Notes from the Maker
The unique positioning of the knot on the 1st wire is meant to help keep the tip opening even and prevent the different blades from varying too much. If one blade starts to collapse, the wire can be replaced - place the knot of the wire against the flatter blade to help vault it. If the sound is too bright for you, try gently messaging the blades of the reed in your fingers for a few seconds - this usually helps darken the sound a bit.
