Reed Characteristics:
We are very excited to carry these contra reeds made by Simon Van Holen, solo-contrabassoon with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra! These reeds have a lovely, dark, powerful tone that projects very well even in the most bombastic orchestral tuttis. They are agile and responsive enough to play the most difficult passages with ease. These reeds can play a huge dynamic range. If you're craving a softer response there is also plenty of cane to take off if you're so inclined. We hope these reeds will help you level up your contra playing!
As with any contrabassoon reed, these reeds are informed by the maker's instrument. These reeds are mostly made and play tested on a Fox 920 but can sometimes be tested on a Heckel as well.
Notes from the Maker:
Van Holen Reeds are made with the utmost precision and care in the reed-atelier of Simon Van Holen.
Van Holen Reeds are crafted from carefully selected cane to ensure consistency from reed to reed. Designed for a warm, rich, and resonant sound, they offer excellent stability in all registers and a quick, articulate response, making them equally suited for expressive playing and precise technical passages.
Each reed is individually handcrafted and may feel slightly resistant when first played. This is a natural part of the break-in process. Gently massaging the sides of the reed can help refine the tip opening and improve response. If, after approximately 10 minutes of playing, the tip opening still feels too open, it can be adjusted by carefully closing the first wire with pliers. Small adjustments are recommended to achieve the desired balance and response.
