This vintage Loree is an extremely unique oboe! Made in approximately 1926 (date confirmed with Lorée) the original owner of this oboe was Fernand Gillet, Prinicpal oboe of the Boston Symphony from 1925-1946. It is not known exactly how many years Gillet owned this instrument or how often it was played in the orchestra. We do know that it was one of the instruments owned during the early years of his tenure in Boston. It was later purchased by Marc Lifschey and played in both the Cleveland Orchestra and San Francisco symphony for a period. Like with Gillet, it is unknown how frequently this instrument was played in the orchestra but we do know it was part of Mr Lifshey's collection for a number of years.

This oboe's lineage is quite impressive. It is not currently in playable condition and does require a significant rehabilitation. Overall condition is quite good for an instrument this age. Keywork shows tarnish in some locations and the there is significant wear of the plating. It will require many pads to be replaced and springs as well. The Grenadilla is in surprisingly good condition. There are some large grains around the trill keys and between which could potentially suggest a crack however there is nothing in the trill tone holes and there is no suggestion of pinning or crack repair. As it has sat for some time without being played, anyone purchasing this instrument with the intent to rehab should want to take it through a break-in process to maintain the health of the wood.
