Adjustment Tips from the Reed Maker

The reed’s blades have a tendency of opening up very wide after soaking in water in the early stages of their life. Before adjusting the wires, “massage” the reed’s blades. This can be achieved by gently putting pressure with your fingers on the blades starting at the collar of the reed and dragging your fingers slowly towards the tip of the reed. Repeat this a few times until the opening is closed to the point that the reed is easy blowing again. If the wrapping becomes loose, that is okay. Add a small amount of softened beeswax, paraffin, or other food safe waxes to hold the thread back in place. No need to worry if the third wire is getting loose with these reeds because the cane expands when soaked and will ensure the wire stays in place.
