The Bassoon Department

Why Buy a Bassoon from MMI?

Whether you’re a parent seeking a starter bassoon reed for a grade-school beginner or a seasoned professional looking for a world-class bassoon, Midwest Musical Imports has what you need to make the most of your music making. Our staff of conservatory trained instrument specialists and highly skilled repair technicians are here to provide you with the care and expertise that come from years of performing and teaching.

Beyond the expert sales staff, we provide a stress-free trial policy designed to make sure you can select the right instrument for you. Every bassoon is played by Jessica or Katie before being shipped, and adjusted in our repair shop if needed. You also get an automatic extra warranty and service on your new bassoon after purchase.

New Bassoons

We’re your number one place for the easiest trial on the best bassoons currently available. We are an authorized Fox dealer and regularly keep in stock the most popular Renard and professional models (including ordering our stock professional bassoons with extra keywork options). We are the exclusive importer and distributor of both Puchner and Wolf bassoons and bocals. We maintain a regular inventory of the professional Puchner models 4000, 5000, and 6000 as well as a selection of bocals for you to choose from. We keep a full line of Wolf semi-professional and professional modern bassoons on hand, as well as a wide variety of Wolf and Wolf-Grundmann bocals. We order Heckel bassoons for semi-annual delivery. Please contact us for details and the waiting list for new Heckel bassoons. We keep over 100 Heckel bocals on hand.

Our new bassoon selection

Used Bassoons

We only accept used bassoons that we would be comfortable selling to a close colleague or one of our own students. You won’t find instruments of questionable make and history in our used bassoon department. Every used bassoon we bring in goes through our repair shop for necessary maintenance or repairs to make sure it will play at the highest possible level from the moment you open the box. No “as-is” sales here! Our bassoon specialists will play test every instrument after it comes out of the repair shop, and before it goes out on any trial. If there is anything out of place, it’s not sealing, it’s binding, or it’s just not adjusted for good ergonomics, we’ll correct it before you get it in your hands. If you are interested in consigning your own instrument, call us to discuss our commission and repair rates for your instrument.

Rental Bassoons

Unlike most music shops, Midwest Musical Imports keeps good bassoons in our rental program. We also make sure they are properly maintained before we send them out. Whether you need a beginner bassoon for a 5th or 6th grader, or need a semi-professional instrument for a more advanced player, we have a full line of instruments in our program to suit your needs. No minimum rental time! Because we are so unique, availability is often limited, so please call well in advance of when you will need a bassoon so we can line something up for you. Rates range from $70-265 per month depending on the individual instrument.

Instrument brands include: Fox, Fox Renard, Adler, Takeda, Moosmann
