We keep a large inventory of high quality oboes. All oboes come with accessories and a one-year warranty, which covers crack pinning, adjustments, and any repairs that become necessary from normal wear. To set up a two-week trial for any instrument we require only your credit card number plus the cost of shipping. (See our policies page for shipping costs and other details.) Either a credit card or a check can be used for payment if you decide to purchase the instrument. Please note that you must pay shipping costs (both ways) whether or not you decide to buy an instrument. Up to three oboes can be sent for a trial at one time. Each instrument is adjusted and play-tested by our staff oboists before being sent out. MMI welcomes bids from educational institutions and instrument dealers. Check our front page for possible sales on any of these oboes! Note: All international instrument purchases will be charged an additional $50.00 transaction fee, and shipping rates may vary. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover for instrument purchases. Please note that MMI offers a 2% discount for instruments purchased with a check, a money order, or cash.

HELPFUL HINTS

Are you unfamiliar with oboe technology speak? New to the world of oboe? Confused parent? We know that choosing an oboe for a student or upgrading from a current instrument can be overwhelming. Visit our Oboe Guide. Specifically designed for a curious student, our Oboe Guide conveniently catagorizes options, and provides links to the appropriate sections of the site.
Descriptions of types of wood:
Oboes can be made of several types of dense wood. Grenadilla is the standard. Also called blackwood, it comes from Mozambique and is the most dense of the woods used to make oboes. Grenadilla oboes project very well and are less prone to cracking. These oboes change dimensions more slowly over time often taking longer to "blow out". Cocabola wood, from Mexico, is less dense than grenadilla. It keeps the beneficial traits of grenadilla while having a slightly warmer sound. Violetwood (also called kingwood), from South America, is less dense than cocabola, and thus has a characteristic warm, sweet sound. Rosewood is the least dense of the standard woods used to make oboes. It has the sweetest sound but doesn't always project as well (it is well-suited for chamber music). Some points to keep in mind: denser woods generally project better, are less prone to cracking, and don't change as much with time. Less dense woods generally produce a warmer, sweeter sound with less of an edge. Lorée Oboes
Since the 1881 opening of Francois Lorée's oboe factory in France, Lorée oboes have been known around the world for their high quality. Midwest Musical Imports began importing Lorée instruments from Anne and Alain de Gourdon in 1984, and continue to do so today. We have a generous number of Lorée instruments in stock and work very hard to ensure that the wait for these instruments is absolutely minimal, if at all. Because we send up to three instruments at a time, there is occasionally a waiting period before each person is contacted on the waiting list. Since each instrument has a "personality" all its own, we feel it is important for our customers to have the opportunity to try more than one at a time. We provide a one to two week trial at the cost of shipping and are proud to offer a one-year warranty that covers normal maintenance, adjustment, and cracks. We very much appreciate your patience if there is a short wait.

Also, you may have noticed that Lorée instruments are not as readily available as they have been in the past. France has officially cut the forty hour work period to a thirty-five hour week, while still paying the employees for forty hours. As a result, there is a slight decline in production, making "planning ahead" a necessity for Lorée purchases.

Our repair technician, Cindy Budd, is an oboist herself and has trained at the Lorée factory in France. She is acutely aware of the intricacies involved with Lorée instruments, and has a great ability for insuring that the instruments play at their optimum level.

Lorée oboes come in three bore styles, which physically differ mostly in the bell: 1) Regular bore, the standard. This bore style predates both the AK and the DM bore. It has a rich, dark tone which oboists have come to love. 2) AK bore: this is bore is based on the AK-series oboes. This instrument has a slightly more conical bore than the Regular, rendering it narrower near the top and slightly wider at the bell. The resulting sound is focused and dark, with less of an "edge" to it. This bore is very popular, especially in North America. 3) DM bore: The Deutsche Model, is more cylindrical than the Regular bore. A full, dark "German" sound results from the wider top and the narrower bell. The Royal is made of the densist grenadilla wood with a thicker bore wall. The Royal is considered to be Lorée's premiere oboe. Cabart is Lorée's student model which carries the same reputation for excellent craftsmanship. The '+3' designation means that the model includes the third octave key.

Midwest Musical Imports also has a good supply of used Lorée instruments. (Please see the used instruments page for a current list). As always, if you're interested in selling your old Lorée on consignment, please contact us. Also, we sell plastic top joints for the standard bore instruments, as well as the Royal. Visit the Lorée website.
