Bassoon Guide
We've divided our bassoons into three catagories. You can click on an individual brand to link to the appropriate manufacturers section.
Once there, click on the model to find out the specifics on that bassoon.
Professional Bassoons
These full German system, premiere wood, bassoons are fully equipped for professional orchestral, chamber, and solo playing.
Some companies offer bore/body wall thickness variations for players demanding a specific sound or playing characteristic. Brands and models include:
Heckel Crest, 41i
Fox 660/601, 201, II
Püchner 4000, 5000
Yamaha 812, 821
Intermediate/ Semi-Professional Bassoons
These high quality bassoons are crafted of either maple wood or polypropylene bodies. These instruments are perfect for advanced students and can take players through college and some minor professional circuits.
Brands and models include:
Fox 220, 240
Fox Model III (polypropylene)
Takeda Model 4
Student Bassoons
Crafted out of polypropylene or maple wood, these fine instruments will typically offer standard keywork and four rollers (F/Ab, C#/D#) and may offer the left-hand plateau key for smaller hands.
Often these bassoons do not include extra keys that an advanced bassoonist would require such as high E key, whisper lock, or extra rollers. Check specifics on each model. Great for beginning students, these bassoons are well suited for band and orchestra programs while being an outstanding value.
Brands and Models include:
Fox 222/222D/222D+
Fox 41, IV (polypropylene)
Takeda Model 2
Fox 51 polypropylene (Short Reach)
See the Fox website for an article on buying a bassoon for a student.
