We’re proud to sponsor the GTCYS 2015 Spring Festival concerts. Performances are on Sunday, May 3rd at 1pm and 4:30pm at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
We have a limited number of tickets available for FREE to customers interested in going to either performance. Please call us to reserve a ticket.
Additionally we will have an informational booth (no products for sale) with three staff representatives and our head repair technician to answer questions about our products and services and provide on-site maintenance for woodwinds involved in the concert.
We hope you will join us to celebrate another fantastic season from these young musicians.
With the latest in plastics technology and the input of dozens of professional bassoonists from around the world, Légère has created a bassoon reed that will meet the demands of the most discerning players. These reeds will not change under different weather conditions and will last up to 10 times longer than your average cane reed. Our bassoon specialists have found these reeds are especially good with soft dynamics, articulation, and smooth legato.
These reeds are available in “Medium” and “Medium Hard”. The Medium strength offers easier blowing and the most relaxed controlled pianissimo. The Medium Hard requires greater air support and firmer embouchure for control, but has the potential for more power at the forte dynamic end.
In Stock! Due to the high cost of shipping, a trial is possible for very serious inquiries only.
We order our stock Fox contrabassoons with the following options:
- Rollers on front C-Eb
- Alternate C# touch by the top vent key – makes for a more ergonomic and acoustically responsive high register
- Divorced low E – improves intonation and response for F#-A in the lower and overblown octave
This contra plays with a huge rich sound and rock solid intonation for four octaves. The keywork moves cleanly and consistently so you can play with as much facility as possible. Comes with a Fox C1 and C2 contrabassoon bocals and Fox hard case. Like all of our new bassoons, this comes with our MMI two year warranty.
We also stock Heckel contrabassoon bocals and Kolbl/Roko contrabassoon gig bags if you need the extras!
Bassoon specialist Trent Jacobs has his bassoon further customized by our head repair tech Eric Anderson. Check the description and photos on his blog.
After careful consideration, I decided I wanted to add a right hand Eb trill and offset the C# trill on my bassoon. I had Eric Anderson at Midwest Musical Imports again do the work. We used Fox key castings and posts and had the plating done at Brinkman’s Silver Plating in St. Paul. Some components, as always had to be made specifically for these keys. Here’s a gallery of the entire process!
Introduced in 2013, the new Fox Renard “Artist” Bassoon model 260 is a semi-professional, thick-walled, short bore instrument. The same bore design of the model 660 provides great power, stability, and a deep “baritone” quality of sound, but at a much lower price point than fully professional models. The body is made of Red maple, selected for tone quality, a rubber lining in the boot and wing joint. This is a great choice for college level performance majors, or an advanced avocational player that is looking for more than what student models might offer, but still stay under a professional model budget. For our Minneapolis and St. Paul area residents, this is an interesting song-writing/compositional opportunity from our friends at Studio Z in St. Paul. Original post: http://www.zeitgeistnewmusic.org/eric-stokes-song-contest.php
Zeitgeist presents the 20th Annual Eric Stokes Song Contest
The brainchild of the late composer and longtime Zeitgeist friend and supporter Eric Stokes, the Eric Stokes Song Contest (named in his honor after his death in 1999) was developed to encourage and celebrate amateur music-making to increase appreciation of the music of our time. The annual Eric Stokes Song Contest solicits “songs” (any type of musical composition) from amateur composers throughout the Twin Cities. We average 50–70 entries each year, and entrants have ranged from age 4 to 89.
Entries are separated into two categories: youth (up to age 17) and adult, and are then adjudicated by an outside panel. In selecting the jury we choose three to four people who represent a diverse range of artistic perspectives, often including a winner from one of the previous contests. Judges will choose 3 songs for Zeitgeist to arrange for their instrumentation of piano, clarinet and 2 percussion. Winning songs will be performed at Zeitgeist’s “Playing it Close to Home” concerts March 13-15. Winners also receive $100 plus a one-year membership to the American Composers Forum. In the past, winning compositions have encompassed musical styles ranging from jazz to gospel to high modernist.
Entering is easy. Please send a legible score and/or high-quality recording (please indicate whether adult or youth and include address, phone number, and email, plus a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like your materials returned), postmarked by Jan. 5, 2015 to:
275 East Fourth Street, Suite 200
St. Paul, MN 55101
Winners will be notified by Feb. 2, 2015. For more information, please contact Zeitgeist at 651-755-1600 or info(AT)zeitgeistnewmusic.org.
“Music is for the people. For all of us, the dumb, the deaf, the dog & jays, handclappers, dancing moon watchers, brainy puzzlers, abstracted whistlers, finger-snapping time keepers, crazy, weak, hurt, weed keepers, the strays. The land of music is everyone’s nation—her tune, his beat, your drum, one song, one vote.” -Eric Stokes
This activity is made possible with support from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature.

Bassoon bocals made by Wolf have caught on very quickly because of their exceptional response, powerful sound, and excellent price point. We carry a wide variety of different options of bocals from Wolf, and all of the variables result in hundreds of possible configurations. This can be confusing. We generally suggest that you pick a length that is appropriate for intonation for you, and ignore the other variables and decide on a bocal on its own merits, rather than on the theoretical aspects of the metal, bore, plating, thickness, etc. Once you have a bocal you like, you can use this guide to understand what it is that you’ve selected. Fox’s latest professional model combines the best features of the thick and thin walled short bore bassoons! The lightness and ease of the tenor register of the thin-wall 201 with the body and power of the thick-wall 660. Acoustically this bassoon is greater than the sum of its parts.
We are ordering Fox 680 bassoons in both Red and Mountain maple with special keywork options that professionals demand. The standard mechanism is:
18% Nickel silver key castings. Nickel silver hinges and machined parts. Full German system with high D and E keys. Right hand whisper key lock. Rollers on F, Ab, Eb, and Db. Metal tubes extending into the bore in the finger holes of the wing and boot joints to prevent water from entering the tone holes. All posts are set with epoxy and spring posts are locked with screws.
Additionally we order these instruments with the upgraded “Rotary” style whisper lock, double low C, left hand D-Eb trill key, right thumb Ab/Bb trill key, and high F key.
